Meeting Update: March 8, 2011

**Notes directly from Herb Perkins, S.A.Y.A. chair

Meeting Summary
March 8, 2011at 7:00 pm
Courthouse Community Center

1. Skiing Wrap-up – Very successful year. No problems. The thirty-eight kids were very well behaved and enthusiastic. Five bus drivers for six nights – Brenda Levy drove twice.Bus drivers received a thank you card with the kids’ picture on it. SAYA received same thank you card tonight. Herb will cut a SAYA check to Salem School to pay for the bus rentals. If we get many more kids next year we may have to rent two buses and ask for more volunteer drivers. A suggestion was made that we go on two separate nights next year. Thanks to Bev for doing such a great job organizing this!!

2. Some area schools have Tubing Day at Willard. It’s been suggested that SAYA or SalemSchool ask Willard for a Free Elementary Ski day at Willard during the school day. This would give kids who have never skiied a chance to try. We decided to look into these possibilities.

3. Weight Room Proposal – Gracie Lynn and Keith Kelley talked with Mr. Niles and Dr. Piemme at School. Herb signed a letter from SAYA to Dr. Piemme outlining the proposal for the Board of Ed. To consider. We are asking to staff the Weight Room at certain times during July and August so that Salem youth and adults could make use of it under proper supervision.

4. Town-wide Cleanup will be on Saturday, April 16. SAYA asks all members and their friends and family to come out and get involved. and Acadia LeBlanc and Brooke Linendoll volunteered to make posters and put them around School. Herb will talk with Dr. Piemme and others about getting the word out. Bev will bring it to the K-12 Assembly on April 15.Jason Fry will let the sports teams know and get them on board to participate. Willie Linendoll will talk with Mrs. Fish and Mrs. Lewis about Service Hours.

5. Second Annual Cargill Table Tennis Tournament- Saturday, April 23, from 10 am – 4 pm, at the Courthouse Community Center. First and second prize trophies will be awarded to the following age groups – Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12, Adult. SAYA volunteers are needed for this event. SAYA kids, with help from Coach Charlie Perry, ran the whole thing last year.

6. Fashion Show and Dessert Auction – Fri, May 20 and Sat, May 21 – Susi Trombley and her Salem H.S. students are presenting original designed fashions in the Salem Courtroom. Each show will be followed by a Dessert Auction to benefit Lunch, Learn & Play. Charlie Perry will be the Auctioneer. Needed: Kids and parents to help run the Auction. DESSERTS!!People to buy the desserts.

7. Shoppe Sponsored Events – The Shoppe Off Broadway is seeking ideas for events and activities for youth that they might fund.
IDEAS: Return of the Rock Climbing Wall (perhaps annually) A Dog Show (Diane Lewis and Blake) – Environmental Club, Hiking, Yoga, Pickle Ball Tournament (Gracie Lynn), Transportation to Wash. Co, Fair, Outdoor Movies at Courthouse (each night sponsored by a different group, scouts, etc.), Nature Trail Around Town (Blake), Camping at Merck Forest (Remi Le Blanc, Herb, Scouts), Snowshoeing (Blake, Keith Kelley), trip to Ropes Course at Christ the King Center, Bounce-a-palooza (different bouncy bounces), badminton tourney, volleyball tourney

8. Bev Kratzert is researching a Spring Family Rafting Trip

9. Rev. Donna will organize a “Community Craft Closet” based at the First PresbyterianChurch. It will contain supplies available for community use; for instance by parents andkids doing a school project. Area folks could donate items to the Shoppe Off Broadway or directly to the Church. The Closet would be open from 10-12 on Saturdays.

10. Kids want more dances like the Halloween Dance at the Courthouse – Perhaps a dance in early June. Perhaps one in August after L,L &P. Winter Dances could be held at one of the churches.

11. Liz Donaldson is working on a “List of Things You Can Do With Your Family in the Salem Area” – This will be made available to families through school, churches, Library, etc. andon-line.

12. Cycle- Cross Races at SAW – Dan Clary, Dieter Drake, Anthony Cafritz – A tentative date of October 1, 2011 has been chosen for an official USA Cycling off-road Cycle Cross event on the Salem Art Works grounds, Area youth are invited to participate during the morning and early afternoon. The event will be capped off by a Pro Competition. This is Dan’s idea. Anthony has generously provided the venue. Dieter will design the course and make the event part of the official USA Cycling schedule. SAYA needs help setting up the course, supervising the event and soliciting vendors, SAW will get a small percentage of he profits to cover their expenses. SAYA will decide what to do with the rest.

13. New Student Members for next year. It was decided to have a few SAYA meetings atSchool in September and to choose our new members from the students who show up at the meetings. Present members are eligible to stay on as members for another year.

14. Next Regular Meeting – Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at 7:00 pm, at the Courthouse

More from Winter Fest

Another message from Herb Perkins, S.A.Y.A. Chair:

"Thanks again to all those who helped out on Saturday and the days leading up to it. Between the Pancake Breakfast, the day's take from the Shoppe Off Broadway Thrift Store, SAYA baked goods sales, Rotary hot dog sales, and other donations, WE TOOK IN $2,030. Yayyyyyyy!!! That will go to help a lot of folks with their fuel bills, but it probably won't get us through the winter. I have placed a few cans around town to get some more donations. Please encourage your friends to give to this cause. We will probably have to do another fundraiser in a month or so. Any ideas??"

Feel free to comment on this post with any creative fund raising ideas. Thanks!

Further support for the Salem Winter Fest

We received word today from Nancy Gadzinski at the Shoppe Off Broadway that she, Sue Keyes, and Betty Campbell "think it's great that the kids from the YC are having the fuel fund drive. As a show of support for their efforts, the Shoppe Off Broadway will donate any earnings made on the day of Winterfest to the YC to be forwarded to the fuel fund. Go kids!!!"
Thanks so much ladies! This means that everyone should make an extra effort to "shop the Shoppe" on January 29th because it will help raise extra money for the Salem/Shusan Fuel Fund. When the community pulls together, we can really make a huge difference...and have a lot of fun!

The Salem/Shushan Fuel Fund was started by dedicated Salemite Mike Keyes two years ago, as a way for the community to provide for those in need of help with their heating bills. Local businesses and residents have been generous in their support of the fund. It has served many families since its inception. This year is proving to be a challenging year for heating budgets. It is time to build up the Fund to meet that challenge. Come to Salem, enjoy our free Winter Festival, and help spread the warmth!

Bedlam Corners Store Update--courtesy of Debbie Earthrowl

Hello to everyone!
Many things are happening with the restoration of the store! First --- The next fundraiser is THIS Sunday, January 9, from 1 PM until 4 PM at the West Hebron Fire Department Dining Hall (on Route 30 right in the middle of the village of West Hebron). This will be a Roast Beef Dinner, and those who have been to the Hebron Fire Department Dinners know how delicious this will be! They are suggesting a $10 donation for the meal, and some of Jon Katz' photograph note cards will also be available for purchase. Each note card has been signed by Jon.
PLEASE publicize this to your friends and others on your e-mail lists!
Next --- an update on work at the store ... Don Coldwell, Marie, and others have continued to work on taking out pieces of floor, ceilings, and walls that need to be removed. Dan Johnson and his crew closed in one side of the roof yesterday, and I anticipate that the other side will be closed in today!!!!!!! This is very exciting because it will help prevent further damage from the weather. Paul Z. and his son worked to remove the rubble around the building to allow better access for work.
NEEDED -- people and/or trucks to move some of the furnishings and items that were salvagable to a storage unit in Salem. We will gather at the store beginning at around 10 AM on Saturday, January 8, to transport items. We could especially use a couple of folks that feel strong for a few of the items. (It would be a struggle for Marie and I alone!) Also, a truck with a bigger bed than my husband's "baby" truck would be great! For those of you who have electrical or construction items to donate, please contact Bill Clary. He is kindly coordinating all of that, and can let you know what would be useful and where to bring it.
Thanks so much! Thanks to everyone for your continued prayers and support! This is truly a community effort. There are many things going on behind the scenes that are also so helpful. If we were to put together a list of all who are contributing in one way or another, I think that we would all be shocked at the beautiful outpouring of care for Marie, Zack, and this store that has meant so much to so many over the years. Again, thank you for sharing this with others! Blessings in this blessed new year! Debbie (854-3203)
